Reasons you may or may not like "The Hateful Eight"
I really liked this movie a lot. It was my second favorite movie of 2015, behind only Mad Max: Fury Road.
This movie seems to be receiving many negative reviews, based mostly on the following criticisms:
#1 - "The movie is slow and/or too long." If you don't like long movies, or movies that are not filled with non-stop action, I agree that you will not enjoy this movie. Avoid it. If you enjoy suspense, mystery, and entertaining dialogue in spite of run time, you probably will enjoy this movie.
#2 - "This movie has too much gory violence and/or gross sex talk (based on one scene)." If you don't like gory violence or "gross" sex talk, don't watch this movie, and don't watch any movie directed by Quentin Tarantino. If you tend to like the way he uses the humor of over-the-top violence without pulling you so far out of the story that you're any less than enthralled with the fates of the characters on screen, you will probably like this movie.
#3 - "Quentin Tarantino is a dumb liberal who only wants to make message movies about race."
[DISCLAIMER (genuine thanks to The Dude Abides from the comments): The person stating this negative view is meant to be characterized as a racist. This is not to say that anyone who dislikes this movie is a racist, as there are plenty of other reasons someone might not like the movie--I've even provided four of them! I also don't mean to say that anyone who thinks Tarantino is a "dumb liberal" is a racist, or even that a majority of politically conservative people go around calling Tarantino a "dumb liberal." Many politically conservative people I've met enjoy Tarantino movies, and the vast majority of politically conservative people I've met are not racists. However, in the same way that not all men are rapists, but most rapists are men, most American racists I've met are politically conservative, and if I'm writing from their viewpoint, I think it's realistic that they'd call Tarantino a "dumb liberal." I'm really not trying to be political, and to be fair, the next two negative viewpoints I address are stereotypically liberal. END DISCLAIMER]
If you don't like movies that are themed around race relations in the United States, don't watch this movie. If this movie made you uncomfortable because of this, it's probably a good thing that you suffered through it and had to consider race relations over the history of the United States for three hours, even if you were still just angry afterward (toward blacks, whites, Mexicans, whichever).
#4 - "Quentin Tarantino is obsessed with the N-word." See #2. If you don't like hearing the N-word under any circumstances, you won't like this movie. If you fear sticks and stones more than words, value intent over word choice, and recognize the difference between a character in a movie and a movie's director, you'll be okay.
#5 - "This movie is sexist because it contains many scenes of violence toward a woman." If you don't like seeing a woman hit under any circumstances, you should not watch this movie. As in #4, if you can differentiate between characters in a movie and a writer's/director's/actor's real-life morals, you'll be alright. In fact, if you can't differentiate between the actions of characters in a movie, TV show, book, video game, song, or play versus real-life morals, you probably shouldn't watch, listen to, read, or play any movie, TV show, book, video game, song, or play.
I like this movie because of these things that are in it: Cool one room, murder-mystery-style suspense; entertaining dialogue; awesome horror-filmish music, great acting performances (particularly, in my estimation, by Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Dern, and Walton Goggins); goofy, Three-Stoogey humor; gross-out horror-filmy humor and violence; entertaining thematic presentation of the problematic historical race relations in the United States; use of Western film tropes, without necessarily strict adherence to all the beats of a classic Western.
I hope this review helps you decide whether or not you'll like this movie. I also really hope you'll like this movie.
