Wish it didn't have sexist language and ideas
I'm a 4th grade teacher, and so I can see the appeal of this series to boys steeped in a Wimpy Kid sensibility. On the plus side, the author does great things with similes, and his main character is fairly well developed and addresses his emotional ups and downs. On the negative side, the author perpetuates some negative tropes about the differences between boys and girls. For instance, when searching for the missing love interest, the main character says, "Let's try the mall. Girls like the mall, right? That's a thing."
The worst example is when the main character tries to convince his friend to keep a monster as a pet. After the friend declines, the character says, "Quint, I hear you telling me no. But I think, I'm pretty sure, your eyes are telling me yes." And then he takes the monster into the house. That's the stereotypical line leading up to date rape, so why is it showing up in boys' literature right in the middle of the Me-Too era? If it goes to a second print, maybe the publisher can edit this kind of stuff out. Otherwise, it's a great series for boys.
