Voices Not Distinct, Otherwise Gripping Read
This book alternates between the past and the present, mostly between two female viewpoints with a few others thrown in. The book starts with one of those other viewpoints, the 14-year-old girl who is about to be brutally murdered, and we see that murder from her perspective as that first chapter fades to the next. The book is certainly a page-turner, and the author skillfully creates mini cliffhangers at the end of every chapter to keep you flipping the pages. While fictionalized, an actual gruesome murder inspired this story. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that all the viewpoint characters sounded the same. They didn't have unique voices as they should have. The author writes evocative, puts-you-there description, but it sounded like the same words were coming out of all the characters' mouths or were in their minds—hers, the author’s—not their own. But this may not bother you because the author has created such a compelling, page-turning read. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
