When we first purchased these from Amazon we thought this would do the trick to raise and lower potted plants to a lower elevation that we can water them. We had a dickens of a time getting them to work. So, I reread the reviews and figured out how to raise and lower them. A little quick upward motion and they will slowly extend about 24 inches or so. To retract them, simply raising back to the original position and they'll lock into position and hang about an inch lower. They will not retract completely to the closed position. This is a minor issue for us. You can lock these in any position as long as you raise them slowly and allow them to lock in your desired location. If you try to raise them too rapidly, it won't lock anywhere.
