Tablespoon guides make this very useful, but the stainless steel version looks a bit nicer.
OXO makes two different versions of this...identical lids, but the OXO Good Grips Butter Dish, Stainless Steel/Clear is made of stainless steel and this one is made of plastic. As of this review, this plastic one is a couple dollars cheaper.
Which should you buy? Here is a rundown of the similarities and differences:
Similarities:
- The lids on both are plastic. The plastic lid is very solid, and seems sturdy, with a subtle OXO logo in the center of the top of the lid.
- The bases are the same size. Either will accommodate 4-ounce sticks of butter. The base is long enough and wide enough to hold either the longer "Eastern Pack" sticks (4.8 inches long) or the shorter "Western Pack" sticks (3.1 inches long).
- Both have rubberized "feet" that help hold it in place...it won't slip as you try to slice into the butter.
Differences:
- This stainless steel version is a bit heavier. For me, I prefer this extra weight. I don't think it makes it any more or less functional, but the extra 3 ounces make the dish seem more "professional".
- The plastic base has tablespoon markings. I REALLY like this feature. I often find myself needing a tablespoon and don't want to cut into a stick of butter that is already wrapped. So, usually, I just eye it up. The guide on the plastic base means I no longer have to guess. And, note that there are actually two guides, depending on whether you use the longer or shorter sticks of butter.
That's it...stainless steel is a bit heavier and more elegant, and the plastic is lighter and has tablespoon markings. Get whichever best meets your need. I am a fan of both, but I wish OXO would make a stainless steel version with markings.
