A Carney story, true to the 1930s!
I’m about a third of the way into the book... it’s an interesting story about a young black woman with a gift for communicating with animals, which catapults her into becoming one of the “side show freaks” at a local carnival. I love her relationship with her pet Pygmy marmoset monkey, Mico, and her reflections about the new sphere of humans and animals she has joined at the carnival. I find that the author is very true to the jargon of Depression era people, making no attempt to be “politically correct” and tweak her words to fit the values of the 21st century. Jargon contemporary to the 1930s is used, such as “cooch show”, and very typical of what “carneys” would call a burlesque show. And best of all... no swear words whatsoever... just plain old, clean talk, making it even more appropriate for this 1930s era story. I look forward to reading more of the book. It was the best choice for me out of all the titles this month!
