Just buy it.
Bought these after seeing someone’s super organized freezer on a meal prep page. It looked like someone built a Lego wall in their freezer. 8 cubes fit in a gallon ziplock bag, although my husband can only get 6.
I waited a bit, due to the price, and not wanting another item in my kitchen. I mean, I have the empty cool whip containers from 1995, and they work well.
I kept thinking about them, and finally just sucked up the price tag and got 2 of them. I’m so glad I did! Even my curmudgeon of a husband, who was originally mad that I bought “ice cube trays” is in love.
It’s been about a month and we haven’t even put these things away. We have made bone broth, bean soup, chili, Mac and cheese, and more.
The reason I love these more than the cool whip container or other plastic wear is that the cup measurements are right there, molded into the silicone. So, that bean soup...a large portion will cause distress, but we froze 1/2 cup portions and were able to finish our work day without offending our coworkers.
It’s great for portion control too. Mac and cheese...We normally only get 4-6 “servings” when I make it. I’m slightly embarrassed to say that apparently it’s 14 cups of Mac and cheese and 1 cup portions for lunch is more than enough.
The only thing I’m not sure about is if I can put these in the oven, like other silicone, if it starts to retain smells (it hasn’t so far...and as noted above: chili, beans, lots of onion and garlic recipes). It feels like part of what makes it so durable is that there is metal inside the rim. I’m not sure what metal and silicone heated up do to eachother.
