If you loved the books, this is not for you.
First off, where did they spend $10M/episode?? It looks so fake. Like sooooo fake. No chance to get immersed in what should be a stunning world based on the books... Another reviewer said CW vibe and they are right. Second, this is inspired by the books at best. It's one thing to make some changes to make it make sense on film vs book, but they apparently decided one of the best fantasy series ever want good enough and decided to completely rewrite it. Pretty much nothing in the first episode happened in the books. My favorite ridiculous (and totally unnecessary) change was apparently Perrin now has a wife and he accidentally kills her while fighting trollocs.
People are going to make comparisons to Game of Thrones, but even if you don't like the changes made in GoT, it was beautifully shot and acted, and generally true to the source material. I was looking forward to this show for so long... So disappointed.
Update after 4th episode:
No... It isn't following the books. That much is very clear. This episode started to move the show towards something worthwhile though. I'm hesitantly optimistic. Bumping my review to 2 stars for the moment. We'll see if they can continue to evolve this into something interesting without ruining the story. If anyone but Rand ends up as the Dragon Reborn though..............
Update after 5th episode:
Further departures from the story in some ways, in others they are honoring the vision. I liked Loial. Lan feels like too great a departure at this point. Egwene is kind of a badass. Overall though this is feeling better. I'm starting to get genuinely curious where they are taking this.
Update after episode 6:
Moraine and the Amyrlin are lovers??? Fun.
