Great Forehead Thermometer for Seniors Too!
My wife and I are active 70-year-olds. This is our first forehead/ear (i.e. not oral) thermometer. We are impressed by its convenience, accuracy and ease of use. We like its ability to take measurements quickly and easily, which makes it especially valuable for tracking temperature changes that indicate a developing infection. We tested the thermometer for forehead measurement accuracy, taking two forehead readings (96.7,96.7), then oral readings with five different digital thermometers (96.8,97,97,97.2,97.3), then followed-up with two more forehead readings (97,97.3). The close agreement between readings convinces us we can rely on the forehead thermometer for all our needs. We also tested the high-temp alarm function using a glass of warm water, since our temps never got high enough to activate the alarm. It worked fine, as the manual described. The warning beeps were pretty faint (probably because we have high-frequency hearing loss), but the red flashing display is plenty good enough to get your attention. We didn’t have much luck getting consistent readings in ear mode (possibly related to our age and ear condition?), but we don’t have any reason to use this mode since the forehead mode is so accurate and the easiest for us to use anyway, so didn’t investigate this any further. We think the included manual could use some improvements. I couldn’t find anything that told me exactly how the beep function is supposed to work in the forehead mode; sometimes it beeped, sometimes not, and it would be nice to know just how it’s supposed to work, but definitely not a deal breaker for us. Also, illustrations showing the different thermometer placements for measurements would be a nice touch too. Overall, we think the thermometer is a great convenience for us senior citizens. It now will be our “go-to” thermometer for both home and travel. Update 3-20-2015 After discussing our ear temperature measurement problems with Innovo, they suggested some tests we could run and, based on the results, thought there might be a problem with the thermometer F2 readings. They immediately sent us a replacement and prepaid label for returning the existing unit. (Great Customer Service and Response by the way!) Our testing showed a difference between ear and forehead temperatures of within 1-2 degrees F, well within the expected range of differences between the two measurement methods. We still give the Innovo Thermometer 5 Stars rating, now for BOTH forehead and ear measurements!
