Bests & Worsts Reviews from Amazon

I would like to make a few points about this product in particular, and about electric hotplates in general, in response to some of the complaints I have read in these reviews. First, the amount of time it takes to boil water will vary greatly depending on the quantity of water, the shape of the container and whether you have a lid on it. I have found that this hotplate will boil 8 cups of water in a covered pot within an acceptable amount of time, about 12-15 minutes. Not as fast as a commercial gas range, but OK for what it is. Once the water has reached a boil, the smaller burner will keep it boiling if covered and will simmer if uncovered. I don't know what more you might expect from a $40 unit. Second, yes the burners cycle on and off. That's just the way electric hotplates work. In fact, that's the way most electric stoves work. There is no other way to build a reasonably priced cooktop or hotplate. That's why serious cooks use gas. Third, these units will not take a lot of abuse or rough handling. If you want a hotplate that can be handled as roughly as you might a commercial range, you can buy commercial grade hotplates, but they will cost you several hundred dollars. Otherwise, handle the knobs gently and they will serve you well. Is it really necessary to point out that you get what you pay for? And why would a person so dissatisfied with a product buy three of them? Fourth, if you allow your food to spill over when cooking, don't blame the hotplate for being difficult to clean. Blame the cook. Finally, this product is fine for someone who needs a temporary cooktop during a kitchen remodel for example, but for long-term use, spend a few more bucks and get a Broil King or some other commercial grade unit.
