It's ugly. It's earthy. And it makes your skin feel great!
I hadn't used African Black Soap before getting this, but had read a lot about it and was thinking about trying it. When I saw that Plant Guru had a coupon for the black soap, I decided that it was time to give it a whirl. I've ordered a bunch of items from Plant Guru before, and everything so far has been great, so I wasn't worried about some sketchy quality or anything like that. I was a little concerned about potential scratchy bits, from other reviewers comments, but I've been using this soap for about a week now and haven't been scratched at all.
If you haven't used African Black Soap before, here are some things you should know:
*It's downright ugly. The bar is a conglomerate of blobs and specks of different shades of brown, ranging from a beige to almost black. Think a granite counter top, or one of those healthy brownie bars. My boyfriend was a little weirded out by the looks of the bar when I showed it to him, and asked "you're putting *that* on your face?!"
*It smells a little earthy. It's a good smell, but it isn't like a normal perfumed soap, so don't expect it to smell like something from Bath & Body Works.
*It's very soft. Similar to a chewy granola bar. Don't let the whole bar sit in your shower all the time, or the moisture will turn it into goo. I broke off a marble sized chunk and kept the rest in a ziploc. I have the small chunk in a little shallow dish (like a shaving cream lid) and take it into the shower then bring it out when I'm done. It dries pretty quickly.
*A little goes a long way. Back to the marble sized chunk- I rolled it into a ball, and just roll it in my wet hands a few times and it makes a pretty good lather. You don't need to use a lot of the soap to make a nice lather with it, so a bar should last a good long while.
*It will make your face a little tingly if you leave the later on for a minute. Not bad tingly, but tingly like it's doing something, lol.
*Your skin will thank you. Seriously. And then it will ask "why did you not get this sooner?!"
You get two pretty big bars in this bag, enough to last a loooong time if you keep it dry while not using it. The bars are individually wrapped and the brown bag it comes in is lined and has a ziploc closure.
I've definitely noticed a difference in my skin since using the black soap, and it's only been a week.
Normally after washing, my face it feels all dry and tight, like I need moisturizer ASAP or it's going to crack. Then by the end of the day it's all oily and greasy, except for in the winter it's dry and irritated around my nose and mouth and oily everywhere else. That doesn't happen with the black soap. I've been using it in conjunction with a Frankincense/Geranium blend face oil, and my face feels well moisturized all day, without any greasiness. The dry, red areas around my nose and mouth are completely gone, even with being outside in the snow and wind over the weekend.
My whole face feels softer and smoother, and I swear that my crow's feet aren't quite as noticeable. :)
If you're thinking about trying African Black Soap, or have been using it and are thinking about trying this brand, do it. You won't be disappointed.
