I have a large family so we end up putting a lot of mileage on our printers. After discovering years ago that Canon printers were faster at printing PDFs than HP (a big deal when my wife was in college) we switched primarily to Canons. HP has since fixed their PDF printing problem but Canon remained our "go-to" printer brand for home use. This MG6620 is a really good printer for your typical user: somebody who prints only occasionally but needs support for a wide variety of print sources (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone) and some basic "office" functionality (namely copier and scanner). Note that this model doesn't have a fax, but there are fax services which let you scan a document and fax it (such as efax, HelloFax, and FaxZero). For the price you get a fast text printer, a good scanner and copier and a decent photo printer. The footprint of this printer is reasonably small so a student should have no trouble fitting this onto a small desk. It is a little noisier than I'd like, but it's by no means the nosiest printer I've ever owned. For $50 you can bump up the Canon MG7520 which will bring you slightly better spec that most people will never take advantage of: MG6620 5 Individual Ink Tanks 100 sheet capacity Scanner= 1200x2400 Max Print Res= 4800x1200 (Color) 600x600 black MG7520 6 Individual Ink Tanks (adds a gray ink tank which is supposed to help "balance" text and photos) 125 sheet capacity Scanner = 2400x4800 Max Print Res = 9,600 x 2,400 dpi (Color), 600 x 600 dpi (Black) Feature wise this printer is pretty standard. Which isn't a bad thing: for not much money you can buy a really good multifunction printer with a smartphone/tablet printing app. I do really like the new interface on the Canon photo printers (HP is doing something comparable). It's more intuitive than what they've done on their office printers. All-in-all a printer that does pretty much everything a typical user will want to do for not much more than the price of filling up your car with a tank or two of gas.
