Great Head Unit for Android Users
I just wanted to give everyone my Review of the FHX-720BT. I am strickly an Android!! user and a lot of the information available is very vague on the Android subject. The manual isn't too much better at clarifying many specific features for your Android phone. I use a Experia Z1s from T-Mobile which has the Android 4.4.4 which I am connecting via Bluetooth. Bluetooth Pairing is super simple and works great. My phone connects when I enter the car and I'm able to use the phone through the the Radio. It will display My address Book, Missed Calls, Dialed Calls, and Received Calls. You can also use the 6 Station Presets to save your 6 favorite numbers. Using the Head unit to make phone calls works great and the audio is very clear. I mounted the microphone on top of the steering columm cover pointinbg straight at my face.
OK now for the specifics. Once you have your phone paired and BT Audio is on you will press the Source button and you will see Radio, CD, USB, BT Audio.
1.- in "BT Audio" mode you will be able to listen to any application that is running on your phone, Music Player, Pandora, Iheart, You Tube, Video Player, etc....and you will only get skip Forward/Backward, Play and Pause functions. This could depend on the application that you are running. Your will also see the Track info on the screen. You will not get special Pandora functions unless you activate "APP CONN,SET" under the System Menu.
2.- "Pandora" Mode is available when activating the "APP CONN.SET" Feature in the system menu, you will get APP Mode and Pandora added as you cycle through the source menu. Pandora mode will allow you to get full control of the Pandora APP via Bluetooth on an Android Phone. When I get in my car an the radio is in the Pandora source it will automatically connect and run pandora on my phone. I do not have to do anything it will start by itself. You get a black screen on your phone showing a conection screen between Pandora and Pioneer. When I get out of the car Pandora will shut down automatically. This to me is one of the best features of the receiver. You can browse and Change your stations from the Head Unit, you can thumb Up and Down also. There are a few more features available through this mode but nothing I use all the time.
3.- "APP" Mode , this is a waste of time. I tried many of the Pioneer apps on the Playstore but the reviews on all of them suck and they don't work properly. You have to install "AppRadio" to get app mode to connect, but then I tried adding apps but nothing happens. The only app that seamed worthwhile was Iheart Radio but it would not work through this mode. Iheart Radio through "BTAudio" mode works great and less hassle.
4.- "USB" mode, this mode works great with a USB memory connected to the front of the unit. You can browse folders, Use Random/Shuffle mode, and Repeat mode. If you are using Ramdom/Shuffle mode but want to stick to One folder only, the Repeat function will allow you to do this.(Not in the Manual). Also in this mode you can activate "Mixtrax" which will mix your tunes for you. It works OK, You can turn off all the flashy stuff if you want. Turn Short Playback "OFF" if you want to hear the full song. Lots of features in the manual. You will see all the track info on the display.
5.- "USB" Mode with Phone, Connecting my experia directly to my head Unit via USB cable. This works great, My Xperia phone allows me to connect in two diferent ways "MTP" Media Transfer Mode and "MSC" Msss Storage Mode. The Media Transfer mode will see all media in the Phone and it plays them all perfectly, the other mode will show my Phone as a regular storage drive, I can also browse folders and play whatever I want, just like USB. I believe that MIXTRAX will work only in "MSC" mode.
Overall, I'm very happy with the head unit. I like bluetooth connectivity, I'm not really interested in wired connectivity unless I'm charging my phone, which this Head Unit will do perfectly. This is a great advantage with Android vs Apple, on Android you can use the Pandora App without using a wire. Track info is displayed for all modes, even BTAUDIO on most apps that you run. Also when listening to the radio you get the Radio and Track info from the radio station.
Hope this helps in clarifyng some of the features that this Head Unit offers to Android Users. Great features and Sound for the small price !!
*** I used the PAC SWI-RC to get all my steering wheel controls to work without any issues on this unit.
