I have been loyal to Apple products for several years now. I have a MacBook, iPhone, and have gone through a few iPads which is what led me to the Fire. My first iPad fell face down and shattered which led to me paying $300 for a replacement, the next one took a hit in the charge port which prevented the lightening cable to go in (another $300), the next one actually wasn't my fault so I took the $300 my friend gave me, added another $100 and bought an iPad Air. Just to be safe and smart, I put it in a Lifeproof case. While leaving church one night, I was also trying to put my screaming child in the car, left the iPad on the roof of my car, and left. After much searching, I gave up on trying to find it. I decided after this, that I cannot be trusted with iPads which is what led me to the new Fire HD 8. The last Fire I played with was a first generation and I wasn't too crazy about it compared to my first non-shattered iPad. This one, I am thoroughly impressed with. It's very light-weight, has beautiful picture, and moves faster than my old Air. Also, if my luck with iPads transfers to other tablets as well, I'm out $89 instead of a few hundred (minimum). The screen is a little bigger than an iPad mini and perfect for casual use. It has very smooth transition between apps and plays great video. I do like the idea of being able to put in an SD card for more memory which is a welcome change from having to regularly delete things from an iPad to make room for new updates and apps. You really will need a Prime membership to get the most out of your Kindle experience but it's not an absolute. I wouldn't say that this is superior to the iPad. However, I would say it is a great value and if you're just looking for a tablet for reading, entertainment, games, and videos, give this tablet a good look. You may save yourself quite a bit of money.
