Not .45X But Still A Great Deal!
There seems to be a lot of confusion over this lens adapter. First of all, it's not a standalone lens, it's a lens adapter that screws onto the front of your existing lens. Second, the 52mm refers to what diameter filter thread this screws onto, not what focal length lens this mounts to. You can use this on any camera and lens as long as the lens has a 52mm filter thread on the front. If you want to know what diameter filter thread your lens has just look at the inside of the lens cap. It should say in there or there should be a number on the lens next to a diameter symbol that looks like this: Ø. The lens adapter includes two pieces. They can be used together to give you a wider angle view on your existing lens, or you can just use the macro filter part to take pictures of stuff close up. As far as image quality, if you're just using the macro filter without the wide-angle adapter it looks great. Not quite as good or as powerful magnification as a dedicated macro lens, but still it's very good for most purposes. If you've used a close-up filter before that's basically what this is. When using the wide angle adapter piece the center of the frame stays sharp and the edges are pretty blurry. There is also significant barrel distortion. If your subject is on the edge of your frame or you need to keep your lines straight then you won't like this lens adapter. But if you don't have those requirements or you don't mind sacrificing some image quality to get smaller size, lighter weight, and cheaper price, then this little adapter works quite well. It's a great economical way to try out wide angle or macro and see if it's something you might want to buy a dedicated lens for. It also works pretty well for minimalist kits such as a 35mm prime lens and shooting with shallow depth of field, since it usually doesn't matter if the edges are blurry. The biggest problem I have with this wide-angle adapter is that it claims to have a 0.45X magnification factor, but in reality I measured closer to 0.7X magnification. Mounted on a 35mm lens it looked more like 25mm or 26mm. 5 stars for value, -1 star because magnification is different than stated. Update: I didn't realize this until a commenter brought it to my attention, but this adapter appears to have a different magnification depending on what focal length lens it's being used with. It has a much stronger effect with wider angle lenses (35mm or less on full frame), with longer focal lengths showing progressively less of an effect. By around 50mm the effect barely becomes noticeable.
