Good for RV use, but has some shortcomings
I purchased a Lasko 5160 to provide electric heat in our 32' travel trailer while connected to shore power in Spokane, WA in winter. Works great to heat the trailer - temp got down to 15 degrees one night, and we never had to use propane heat (although I DID have to adjust the trailer's thermostat down to 65 to prevent the gas heat from coming on.)
I like the quiet oscillating feature, good heat projection/distribution, and the fact that the (plastic!) grill on the front of the heater doesn't get very warm at all, but there are a few things I DON'T like:
1) The thermostatic (Auto) function only works on "Hi", so the heater draws the full 1500 watts when it is set to Auto. I had to add a dedicated 15 amp GFCI outlet for the heater because all existing outlets in our trailer are on one GFCI because you can't set this heater to Auto + low power. Needless to say, we have to do a lot of "power management" with the heater turned on Auto, because running a coffeemaker, microwave, etc. in conjunction with the heater's 1500 watt load can trip the trailer's 30 amp main breaker. Not usually - but it does happen.
2) When power to the heater is disconnected or the heater is turned off, when power is turned on again, the heater remains off, and it doesn't "remember" the fact that it was "on", that it was set to Auto, or that it was set to oscillate.
3) There is no indicator for the "oscillate" function - you get left to guess if the fan is set to oscillate, or it just isn't oscillating because the Auto function is being used and the room temperature is warm enough to trip the thermostat to "off".
The Lasko 5160 is a good buy, but it would be "great" buy if Lasko would address these issues.
