Great alternative to a ramp
We got this for our 12 y.o. 75 lb shepherd mix after she jumped out of the car one day and wrenched her back. I chose these steps over a ramp because I was worried that I wouldn't always be parked somewhere where there was enough space behind the car to use a ramp. With these, you really only need 3 feet or so (less if your dog is willing and able to turn as they step up). With our car (a station wagon) the steps can be used to climb into the cargo area or the back seat and are able to fit in the back seat for storage. The steps are basically hollow on the underside; since we also live in a place that is snowy in the winter, I figure this is actually a plus because you can press them down into the snow to make sure they are steady before the dog has to use them. I don't think they'd be a great idea to use on ice, but neither would a ramp. They were easy to assemble (see other reviewers' posts about lubricating the connections with a little detergent) and easy for our dog to use although we have to guide her with the leash since she still thinks she is spry enough to jump in and out. Finally, I think they will continue to be useful even as she loses more mobility because even if we have to assist her up them, it's still easier than trying to lift her straight into the back.
