The Speakers You Didn't Know You Needed
I didn't need these. I've never heard of Edifier, either. Didn't know a thing about them.
So why on Earth did I ever buy them?
Well, it was my birthday and I was looking to buy myself a turntable, so that I could listen to a stack of old Jazz records I happened upon. I thought I was going to spend a few hundred on the turntable, but, as it came in under a hundred dollars, I had a few bucks left over and these Edifier R1280T speakers were a recommended add-on purchase, so I bought them on impulse, thinking that I could use them *somewhere*, if they were not well-suited to the turntable or the room.
I was pleasantly surprised.
They are small and unobtrusive, well made, understated and stylish.
The sound is very, very good. Deceptively good. They sound like much bigger, more expensive speakers.
I'd expect the high and mid ranges to be good on speakers like this, but what surprised me is the full, rich bass. (No, you probably don't need a subwoofer with these.)
So what's my setup like? I live in a factory loft, essentially a great big room with 3-meter-high ceilings. I have several other systems in my space, all connected together with Chromecast Audio devices. I use these with an "Audio Technica AT-LP60" turntable, connected by plain old RCA cables. (I know that bluetooth and USB are all the rage these days, but if you're going to be listening to LPs, you might as well go full-analog.) The second speaker connects with an actual wire, not some new technology that will become obsolete someday.
I use the second set of RCA inputs on the speakers with a Chromecast Audio, so that it works seamlessly with my other gear. (Note that there's no switching or button-pushing required to go from one input to another, either. It just works.)
There are knobs set into the side of one of the speakers with Volume, Bass and Treble adjustments. Set the bass and treble to center and forget that they are there.
You may notice that the volume knob has no "start" or "stop" position—you can spin it forever. The reason for this is the remote control. This is a nice feature, as you won't have to walk across the room to adjust it because you left the knob set too high or low.
If you're the sort of person who calls himself an 'Audiophile' and tests out speakers with an oscilloscope and signal generator, you'll probably be able to find some small fault with these, but if you're the sort of person who listens to actual music with your actual ears, you are going to love them.
I'm listening to them now, in fact.
This morning I got an album in the mail, Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" remastered and pressed onto 180 gram blue vinyl.
Man, does it ever sound good. I can't imagine the music sounding better, in fact.
When you order these, add in the turntable and that album. You will not be disappointed.
