Deserves a Chance to Grow
I saw the ratings and was a bit worried whether I’d like it or not. Now I have watched through Episode 4 so far and honestly I love it. It has a certain Tolkienesque quality to the different storylines and their reflections on modern society and issues. Honestly I think that may be contributing to some of the polar opposite reviews. I think this show will fall under "Love" or "Hate" depending on who is watching it. Positives: I think it has something to say which I personally prefer The scenery is gorgeous (really excellent job on the set and costume design) The storylines are solid and I see a lot of potential for growth and the series has a lot of different directions it can go Personally I really enjoyed the acting all the way around though I admit Alice Krige stole the show for me every time she was on the screen as Haruspex. Negatives: The pacing is a bit off but improves as it goes (that said the slow parts remind me to a degree of shows like Outlander that take their time and play with pacing) I do feel there is far more sex than may be necessary which wasn't a negative for me but may be for some. For as much as they can draw out some scenes to add suspense..romance seems to be a bit too quick in pace and rushed. IE They meet, talk twice and boom ROFL. That can be improved on though by just slowing some of that down a bit more to better establish the relationships and by showing some restraint on those scenes. All in all though I really liked it and am enjoying what I’ve seen so far. Granted we will see how I feel by the end, but so far I am finding it to be a really interesting fantasy tale that I hope people give a chance. Added now that I made it to the end: I feel like once it got to Episode 4/5-8 it was really starting to find its balance and flow. The last episodes were really good and they definitely left me wanting to see how the show will develop over time. For those that have said there is "nothing new here". I feel the show is pulling from a large pool of inspiration (as most art forms do) but how it is putting it together is unique unto itself and honestly I really love the various species and how they each have their own voice and issues they are dealing with and I am eager to see those things develop even more.
