Decent router. DSL modem DOA?
Ordered this unit on 1/10, tried hooking it up, and the DSL light continually flashed green. Contacted Netgear support, and got a script kid, and they hung up on me when I discovered that they did not know their own hardware's specifications, and asked for tier 2 support. Called ATT, and verified that my line was ok, and tried my old 2 wire modem to verify. It synced up perfectly. Called Netgear again, was instructed to update the firmware to .17US. Upgraded, did a hard reset, with no joy. The modem still flashed green. They stated that the device was defective and to return it.
Got in touch with Amazon via chat, and am getting a replacement unit tomorrow (1/12). I'll update once I get the new unit.
((Update 1/14/12)) Got the replacement unit, and it had the same issue. Problem was escalated to Engineering at Netgear. While waiting for them to get back to me, I decided to do some sleuthing. Checked the 2 wire's settings again, and noticed that the DSL signal was being acquired from the outer pair on the RJ11 jack. Looked at the RJ11 female connection on the Netgear, and only saw pins for the inner pair. (Cheap-out engineering on Netgear's part)
I switched the wiring on my jack to put the signal on the inner pair, and reconnected to the router. BOOM! synced' up in about 20 seconds, and had Internet connectivity in about 15 seconds after that.
Final thoughts..Netgear has a winner here, the dual radios and rock solid wireless is a plus! Netgear does however need to include documentation with this unit, including troubleshooting tips. Kinda hard to read the docs online if your FRIGGIN MODEM IS NOT WORKING!
I do feel that by only using the inner pair for DSL, is just a way to save a few pennies on mfg costs, but if it is not documented that it is REQUIRED, can cause issues like mine. Two days of business down-time, and an unneeded RMA. My old 2Wire modem/router was able to sense which pair the signal was on, and used it. :)
