This is not an expensive heater and after a failed attempt at a different brand heater I was a little worried. No worry for me (and least not yet). I put the heater in the tank, waited 30 minutes and turned it on. In a few hours after I turned it on the tank was up to temperature and has stayed there. The only thing I didn't like was the temperature was a degree or two off of what the heater said but not a big deal. I've had more expensive ones do the same thing. You have a minimum water line or it can go completely under the water. I have it set so I can change the temperature without sticking my hand in the water. I only just got this heater so if I develop any problems with it I will update my review but for now all is good. Update - Over a month later and all is still good. The water is always at the same exact temperature with very, very little variance. Even after water changes the temp is back quickly. I will be ordering another one or two for other tanks. Update - 10 months later and all is still good. Worth the money! Update - 2 years and a few months later and still going good. Update - 4+ years and I'm still using the same heater. Part of the reason it might be lasting so long is the fact that I still have the top out just enough to change the temp without touching the water. I haven't changed the temp in years though.
