detailed review from a Geeky, Experimental designer
Ok I think this review will answer many questions here. (English is not my first language but I'll try to make it clear) -- As a geeky designer, with experiences on engineering. I find it hard when I shop online. So I hope less people will suffer like me. 1) the "crack" sound: it will have a "crack" sound every time when turned on from room temperature. It's a normal sound from metal container changes its shape. Not scary at all, just imagine it's a thin metal water bottle maybe. And it "cracks" again when it cools down. But judging from the manufacturing precision, I assume some heaters may not have this problem, if the oil is pure enough with minimal inflation and there's less air within the heater shell. 2) the "click" sound: it's frequently mentioned in previous reviews. It comes from the relay circuit. When the heater gets to the set temperature, it stops working. So there's a "click" to disconnect the power from heating. And vice versa. - HOWEVER, there's a trick of the frequency of "clicking". I experimented with it for four nights with different settings: - when the power level is set to HIGH, it becomes very sensitive to the change of the room temperature. For example: it's set at 73 degrees, and after a while the relay "clicks" off, with all my windows and doors shut, it will "click" on within 2 min. If I keep a window half open, it clicks on within 1 min, thus becoming annoying. - BUT, when the power level is set to MIDDLE or ECO, it provides a wider range of allowance for the temperature variation. Still set at 73, it clicks on and off with intervals more than 15 min. With a window half open, the click happens around every 15 min or so. I couldn't notice them and fell into sleep. (ECO mode has a much longer interval, I assume it allows for a bigger temperature drop before turning on. But I've never counted the time. ) 3) room size: I live in a studio with 220 sq ft, around 20 sq. Ceiling 9 ft high. Walls uninsulated. One side of the room is completely built with 8 glass windows. Old building. Tiny leakage of the windows. ( I noticed the heater is designed for 144 sq ft before my purchase. so I would say it turns out not bad.) - it works fine when - the outdoor temperature is 50 - keeps the room temperature at 73 - middle power lever - (I tried 76 once, but it will constantly heat all the time but never gets there) - also works fine when - out door 50 - room temperature 76 - high power lever 4) Eco mode, it saves energy for sure. But I felt an obvious, more than noticeable temperature drop during the intervals. So I had to switch the Eco mode off. I don't know how it works for smaller rooms. Because the peripheral place of the room where I'm sitting at is right at the window. Probably the sensors in the heater is still warm enough. 5) The power cable. It worried me a bit when it's working at high power, as the power cable becomes warm. I held it and it was slightly warmer than body temperature, feels like somebody's getting a fever, but not higher. So I didn't dare to put it on my rug, as sometimes I fall into sleep too deeply. 6) Other stuff but may be helpful: - very small and compact, I've never seen such a small heater with only 6 fins before I came to the US. Probably it's because I'm from a cold area. Good thing is it's good for storage. - odor of the paint. it's a common issue for the heaters. disappears after the first or second time of use. - noise ( bubbling noise from the oil) I heard it twice in the past week. So it was never a problem. When It's re-heated after completely cooled down. - silence, perfect for bedroom. only occasional click sound mentioned above. The background noise of my room is some white noise from traffic or I don't know where. Hopefully this helps. Wish you guys a warm winter as well.
