Outstanding, but very cheaply made, so prepare to fix it
First, buy this thing right away. As long as you have room to roll it about 3/4 over and then back to the starting point, there is no better way to clean cat litter. This thing is an absolute great product, hands down. I'd probably give up the cat before I'd give up this box.
But the top comes off using little clips that break easily. If that happens, go to home depot and buy some screws, washers and wing nuts to use in place of the clips that break off. The screws and such cost me about $5.
And fear not if your cat likes large boxes: the actual space for the cat in this box is absolutely tiny (1/2 of the space is reserved for the operation of the thing) and my cat prefers it to the largest size enclosed box you can buy. Before this box, he refused to use any box that wasn't huge. Now, he loves this tiny thing. Go figure.
It comes in three pieces (with a fourth piece, a little drawer, as part of the top). And no instructions. So here they are:
Put the base on the ground, lay the small piece (it's sort of a ramp looking thing - half solid, half slotted) on the top of the base, so that the solid part covers the top of the right half of the base, and the slatted part angles down towards the bottom of the base. Very important: The bottom of the slotted part fits into a little raised tab on the bottom of the base to hold it in place. You'll see a notch for the upper flat part of the ramp and that's where it goes: you just rest it on the top of the base. Pour cat litter on the left side of the base, so that it fills to about 4-5" of the left side of the base. You can use any clumping litter, but it has to clump for the thing to work,
Pull the clips on the top, back in the opposite direction of the arrows, and put the top on so that it covers the base (and the small ramp-looking thing). Slide the 3 clips in the direction of the arrows until they lock (or break! ha ha).
You only need to unclip the thing to add litter or to deep clean it with the hose about once per month. I bought a big scoop, like the kind you scoop flour with in the bulk section of your grocery, and I use it to refill the litter: I just toss it in the hole the cat would go in, and so now I only need to unclip it once per month.
After the cat poops in the thing, lift the left side up, as if you are rolling it over, end over end, but you don't really want to roll it completely over onto it's top: stop about 3/4 of the way there - about the 2 o'clock position. You'll hear the fresh litter slide through the slats, but the solid pieces will roll over the ramp along the flat part and into the drawer. Then roll it back to a little PAST where you started, to distribute the litter from under the ramp on the right back to the left side. Then set it down where you started. Pull open the drawer and let the waste slide into a bag. The whole process takes about 10 seconds once you've done it before.
This thing is a miracle. Don't buy anything else. It's a 5 star product, but I gave it 4 stars because it's too cheaply made. But don't let that stop you from buying it. It's by far the best solution out there. By far.
