One pass does good, two pass better, three pass or sharpie exposes toner print at an angle
This works great if you don't overdo it. The NSA can probably make out the text under one roll, but it obscures text for 90% of needs. See attached photo of single pass, double pass, multiple passes, and sharpie. I like to roll it twice, with the second at a different angle. If you do it too much you'll make it solid which actually makes it easier to see the text underneath it due to the differences in toner vs ink. It's challenging to see in the photo but if you sharpie over a laser printed doc, you can actually read the text easily at an angle with light. If you need NSA level security, then you'd better use a shredder. Otherwise this is a whole lot easier than trying to use a sharpie to redact one line at a time, and faster / eco-friendly than putting every page into the shredder. Personally, I've switched to using this on most documents and just shred the highly confidential documents such as a financial statement where there's too much to hide. I bought mine at my local Fred Meyer / Kroger pharmacy for less than on Amazon. It works fine on their Rx bottles. If you've got someone using alcohol on your discarded rx bottles then you've got bigger problems.
