Great Sander with a little mod
I purchased this a couple of months ago for use primarily in sanding the 1/4" thick tops and bottoms of Shaker oval boxes that I make. I have a larger Delta Sanding Center, but I wanted something smaller to more easily control the more delicate box parts. For the price, I have not been disappointed! I looked at every sander out there in this price range - I even went to a HF store and looked at their $60 model. The WEN is far superior. the disc and belt run true - no wobble at all - and the unit is quite heavy. There's a lot of thick metal here! What I don't like about this sander is what all of the sanders in this price range suffer from - flimsy tables and poor miter gages. I'm probably too picky with this, but I want a nice solid surface that doesn't move when I'm sanding. Because nearly all of what I'm doing involves 90 degree sanding, I decided to make my own table. I bolted the WEN to a plywood base, and using some scrap cabinet-grade plywood, made a table that is solid, exactly 90 degrees to the disc, and can be adjusted to get as close to the disc as I need it to be. See the photos. With this little mod, I have a perfect sander. Whereas I liked it before, I love it now!! If I ever need to sand at an angle, I can just put the table back on (but beware, the angle gage for the table is made of tape and is very inaccurate!), or go to my big Delta. If you're planning on doing mostly 90 degree work, give this mod a try - it'll make a really good sander into a great one, at a really good price. As for the miter gage - it's loose fitting, just like others in this price range. Hope this helps...
