Finally, a tablet that I can leave my iPad behind for
I am absolutely stunned. Let me give you a little background history. I am an Apple Guy. I am talking about iMacs, Macbooks, Mac minis, iPads, and definitely iPhones (owning the recently released iPhone 6). As a person obsessed with new tech, I always want to try something new. The major disadvantage of the iPad is the close ecosystem (i.e. it's apple's way or the highway). Now I've tried every Kindle version that has come out....I have always quickly returned them due to their clunky "gutted" versions of Android OS (a great idea for phones, especially with the open system, but between the choppy video, OS freezes, etc, I returned the 10 or so Android tablets I've had as well) and the fact that IMO they simply didn't measure up to the iPad's i've owned. Until now. The Kindle HD 7 4th generation...Amazon may have finally gotten it right. Now, I've only had it for 72 hours. But the 3 prior versions of this tablet, it was usually packed up and back on its way to Amazon due to the "clunky" execution I explained earlier. But with their "Sangria" OS (the gutted version of Kit Kat), as well as the quad core processor they put in this thing....this is truly the best Android-esque tablet I've ever used. AND THE FIRST ONE I WILL ACTUALLY KEEP AND USE. Once it boots up, it simply runs...smooth. I can't describe it any other way. Games are crisp and fun to play and view. Video playback on websites (a MAJOR point with me; I felt that Android tablets/Kindle tablets couldn't hang with iPads) is so vastly improved, I actually used the tablet more this weekend than I did on my macbook or my iPhone 6. This thing simply worked quite well out of the box. Its as if Amazon went through the first 3 gens as test runs, and may have finally built a 7 inch tablet that Apple users might say "hey, perhaps I don't have to drop $400 and up on a portable link to the world." The build quality is much better than the previous gens. Now yes, as this is a "non" apple product, the resale value ain't gonna hold. But I don't feel that things won't fall apart if I spend several hours on this thing. Sitting in a dark room, the picture (especially with video) is nice, without much in terms of the famous "light bleed." It is a solid product, doing what it is supposed to do without the bells and whistles. About the only bad thing is that due to it's build materials, it is a big time fingerprint magnet. That can be rectified with a cover, however. I am so impressed, I may actually look to upgrade up to the Fire HDX 8.9 when it comes out later this month, giving this tablet to my boy. Kudos, Amazon. Well done.
