Magic suit vs nightlight (honest review)
I know if you're reading reviews for this sleepsuit you're most likely as sleep deprived as I was a week ago.
I'm a first time mom of a 2 month old who WOULD NOT no matter what we tried let me sleep at night. His longest stretch of sleep was maybe (if I was lucky) 2 hours and then it was 30 minutes to an hour each night. I've read article after article and have asked numerous other parents for advice on what we were doing wrong. Each night we were up soothing, holding, feeding or changing at least 6 times. In my crazed sleep deprived mind I resorted to buying random sleep sacks and swaddles at the wee hours of the morning on Amazon. All claiming to be exactly what we needed for better sleep. Nothing worked. I had 2 friends mention this baby merlin suit and I finally purchased it last week as my little man was within the weight for the 3 to 6 month size. When the suit was delivered I tore into it like a kid on Christmas.
First thoughts. It's really thick!! I immediately worried that my little guy was going to over heat. We keep our heat set on 70 with fans going at night but it still (a week in) freaks me out. It's a pain in the butt to put on. This suit is thick with layers and is rather stiff, two very difficult things to throw on a squirmy baby. Once on, it's almost worth the price just for the laugh. It looks completely ridiculous.
Trying it out. Our first 2 nights were pretty much the same with no change. I grew even more discouraged with thoughts of having to wait until this kid was 18 and out of the house for me to finally sleep at least 3 consecutive hours. On day 3, my husband took little man so I could go attempt a nap upstairs, but I was still so tired and frustrated I ended up taking out my anger on the nursery by moving and rearranging furniture instead of sleeping. I decided to move the humidifier we had in there to a different wall....the wall where we had the nightlight plugged in. I unplugged the nightlight with thoughts of moving it to a different wall but completely forgot to plug the 99 cent Walmart nightlight back in before we went to bed that night. We did our nightly routine and I put our little dude in his silly looking suit wishing for a miracle and we went to bed in the complete dark. 4 and a half hours later I woke up panicked that I hadn't heard a peep out of him. Went in to check on him just knowing he was having a heat stroke and of course woke him up trying to touch his hands, feet and neck. Completely fine (maybe a little warm) but absolutely fine. I got up only 2 more times that first night. And the 3 following nights have been about the same if not better with only 2 to 3 wakings.
I'm so beyond relieved to finally have some sleep I had to write a review. This is night 6. We went down for bed at 8:30. He slept for 5, yes 5 hours before waking up. He immediately fell back asleep for another 3 and a half hours.
Is this suit magic? I honestly can't say. Is it working? I honestly don't know. Even at the beginning when we first tried it he was falling asleep faster and seemed more calm but I can't say whether the change in sleep is solely due to this suit or the fact that I forgot to plug in a stupid cheap nightlight back into a wall....Maybe it's the combination of being in the suit as well as the pitch black room? I don't know and I'm not about to trial and error my way to finding out. lol
I would like to mention one little tip though because I know others are concerned about how hot this suit is. When we get up for night feedings and diaper changes I unzip him and let him cool down/air out while he's nursing on one side. I then do a diaper change and then again flip him to my other side and unzip him again. When he's nursing I only unzip 1 side so he doesn't wiggle his way back out of it. I keep the side closest to me zipped and unzip the side farthest. It gives me a little more peace of mind knowing he's not staying cooped up in the heat of the suit. When he's done and pretty much asleep I zip him up and put him in his crib and he's back in sleep town within a minute.
I'm not sure if this review will help, other than giving you something to read at 3 in the morning while your eyes feel dry as the desert and are going crossed from sleep deprivation while your little one wiggles in your arms bright eyed and ready to party.
Maybe you too have a cheap stupid nightlight to unplug? Who knows. For anyone reading this I wish you the best of luck and hope that you get some sleep soon.
