Excellent Results & Flumoxed Squirrel
So far, six days into the experiment, excellent results, Mr Chip (the fat furry squirrel aka tree rat) has not been able to circumvent this baffle, Oh, he has tried and tried and tried, I do have to give Mr Chip credit for the effort, but his failure has been resounding. He scurries up the Shepard's hook pole, winds up with his head in the middle of the cone, tail and lower body only sticking out, then falls to the ground in ignominy. His failure is my delight, it also offers some humorous viewing, TV is not what it used to be, this is actually better comedy than most of what they are passing off on TV prime time.
The reader may want to know just how I know that this is "Mr" Chip, well he is all but tame, would take a peanut from your hand if you were inclined to offer, someone about two houses over has been feeding him, must have moved recently since he has taken up residence here in the last 5 to 6 months. He is a Mr, he is obnoxious, loves to tease my Jack Russell's by running up the tree by the deck where they gaze out the sliding patio door longingly hoping that I would open it so that the chase would be on. He then, when the door is not opened, sits on the tables on the deck, then taunts them making squirrel noises while directly facing them... poor dogs, they are besides themselves.
He also taunts one of them by cruising the top of the fence, she is a very short Jack, no way she can scale or jump to the 8 foot fence to get a mouthful of Mr Chip, she gets a 165 foot exercise run, the length of the fence, he is so calculating. He is not only a bird seed thief, but a tormentor of the dogs.
I really did not want to use a squirrel cage on this feeder like the feeders, this one gets the larger birds, they are not able to pass through the squirrel cage to eat. So this appeared to be the solution to Mr Chip and any of his brethren, still allowing the larger birds to feed.
This baffle is justice for the birds, and a small measure of justice for the dogs.
I will re-post if Mr Chip or any of his cousins finds away around this impediment to squirrel grazing on bird seed.
***Update: Almost a year later and Mr Chip, his harem and children are still out in the cold on the bird seed, they still try, but it is still an epic failure on their part.
