How to fix the caster issue and be totally happy with the shelving unit
I am writing this review for those who have concerns over the casters that come with the unit, and a twelve dollar solution providing you have a 9/32 drillbit, drill, and 5/16-18 tap for new threads. I just assembled mine a couple days ago. I changed out my casters and am now very happy - it rolls easily even with over 100lb load. I uploaded 3 pics which will hopefully be accepted for publishing The supplied casters have a plastic body and a metal 1/4-20 threaded stem. They screw into the end caps of one section of upright poles that has the nut integrated into the end cap, with the end cap/nut being non-removable. I am using this in my garage to hold a couple tackle boxes and other misc. fishing stuff along with boat oil and a couple tool boxes, and need to move it around frequently. The supplied casters are rough to turn and spin with just the weight of the shelving unit alone - with just one tackle box it was nearly usuable with the supplied casters. It appeared the plastic wheels could just snap. Others reported having failed casters with barely any weight on the unit. Solution: This is what I did - Using a 9/32 drill bit, open up the end cap hole where the supplied casters are supposed to screw in. Then using your 5/16-18 tap, cut new threads. I don't know if we can name other businesses, but at the big box store with orange logo, you can find, in packages containing 2 casters, new 2" casters that are metal framed and have a 5/16-18 threaded stem. I got all four casters for about twelve bucks. POSSIBLE solution #2. I could not find a metal framed, decent caster with a 1/4" thread size stem. Some have found other brands with plastic bodies in 1/4" stem sizes that are an improvement - search reviews here and you will find it. I did not want plastic. POSSIBLE solution #3 Metal casters with threaded stems come predominately with 3/8-16 threads. I didn't want to go that large because I wasn't sure how much metal there was in the end cap for me to drill out in the first place. I still am not sure, but think it might be possible to open up the original threaded hole a little more that I did with the 9/32" drill bit and go larger so as to tap for 3/8-16 threads common on casters big box stores carry. Try at your own risk. I'd buy the unit again, but can't give it 5 stars with the crappy casters supplied.
