Prismacolors for Non-Artists?
I have been using a 50-count box of Crayolas and enjoying adult coloring books for awhile now, but I kept thinking, "shouldn't I have Prismacolors since everyone says they are the best?" So I ordered this box of 24, paying double what the 50 Crayolas cost. So in case you are on that same fence, here's what I think. Unless you are a serious artist, you don't need these. (An exception would be if your hands are arthritic, the Prismas will be much easier for you to use.) The main difference you will notice is that the Prismacolors are much softer and waxier, more like crayons. Also, like crayons, they leave those tiny white spaces in the color; and you will need to use a burnishing pencil to smooth those out if you don't like that look. The cheaper Crayolas are harder and by the time you have applied enough pressure to get a vivid color, you have already "burnished" out the white spots. These are hyped as being much more vivid than the Crayolas, but there is really not much difference if you put pressure on the Crayolas. The Prismacolors will fill areas much faster than the harder pencils, but you may or may not like the "crayon-like" result. They are harder to sharpen and must be handled carefully so as not to drop them and cause breakage inside the pencil. So, I will use these for some things, but the Crayolas will be my main ones. I hope this helps someone else decide whether to switch to these expensive pencils.
