First let me say that the pictures DON'T show a rubber sole. This is a soft sole moccasin and they can be worn outdoors, even in the rain. You just need to know how to cure them. I have worn them for years and they can last for dozens -- yes, you read that correctly -- of years outdoors. When I lived in Yosemite National Park for year the Miwok indians that lived there taught us how to cure the leather of the sole and this is all I, and most of my friends, wore even for hiking over granite rocks. Here's how to cure the sole: 1. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: At first only wear them on grass or dirt, avoiding concrete and asphalt. If you live in the city wear them in the park or go on some hikes. In time the sole will get shiny and the surface will become tough and durable and stand up to all surfaces and weather. 2. Don't worry if they get a bit wet during the curing process, like on damp grass. It helps the curing. 3. Now they are cured and there is only one DON'T. While you can wear them in the rain try to avoid wearing them on concrete or asphalt while they are wet, not damp but wet. This might rough up the hard surface you have created. But, if this happens, they can be cured again usually in much less time. You can get decades of wear out of soft soled moccasins that are cured this way. This is how Native Americans and the rest of our earlier ancestors made the soles of their shoes hard before hard soles were invented. I also tend to buy them fairly snug because, with time, the leather stretches and molds itself to your foot. I hate when they fit right away because they will eventually get sloppy on your foot unless you only wear them on rare occasions.
