Paradise, CA - Campfire survivor
I'm from Paradise, California. About a month ago my house, my neighborhood, and my entire community burned to the ground. I had been at work when my boss advised me to go home. I never dreamed that this wildfire would spread so quickly. I made it home and was able to get my two old dogs - unfortunately, my cats ran when they saw the cat carriers.
I had read this book about a month or two prior to any of this. I remembered the part about denial, and so I was able to recognize this in my thought processes. I went through the deliberation process - went through the feeling of dissociation, and decided on the action that I needed to take - that is, to leave while it was still possible, and I was able to determine the best route for escape.
Along the way, I became trapped in an inferno. Just remembering how survivors move through a disaster helped me to remain aware. I remembered the part of the book that emphasised the importance of moving to the sides of a crowd, and so I was able to do that while in my car.
All in all, I purchased this book because I thought it would be an interesting read. I never thought I would actually be using the information that the author presented. It all came back to me when I needed it most - and Amanda Ripley, thank you, thank you for your timely information!!!
