UPDATE: Its been 4 weeks and I still really like this feeder. It is totally working out & it is fun to have the little hummers humming at my home office window. I like this. It is my first Humming Bird feeder, after reading about a thousand reviews of dozens of feeders. Key point- the hummers found it on day 1, came back on day 2, and made it a regular stop on day 3. On day 4 it looks like they brought friends. :-) I put this feeder outside my home-office window, so when they come humming by, I hear them & can look up to see them at the feeder. Fun. They keep looking at me through the window too. Actually, one humming bird came by daily and looked at me though my window for a week - and that is why I ordered this feeder. Seemed like he/she was communicating. Or maybe just curious. WHY THIS HUMMING BIRD FEEDER IS THE BEST 1) It can't leak - This design has the whole bottom half as a big dish. That is the supply bowl. You do not need to turn it upside down, and there are no submerged joints to leak. Nothing needs to be a tight seal. All the liquid is always below the birds. They slurp it up. It is just 1 big bowl that doesn't have a place to leak from. It also means that bees can't reach in far enough to get any. The lid drops on well above the liquid level and doesn't need to seal. So that is great. All the problems are solved by this design. 2) I'm thinking that this design would also be great for someone with arthritis or low hand strength, because there is no twisting needed to refill the feeder. Gravity holds the red lid on. It works great. 3) The whole top of the feeder is red, so the humming birds keyed in on that right away. They had no problems figuring it out, none at all. 4) The whole bottom of the feeder is clear, so you can easily monitor levels and cleanliness. Everything I read said not to add any red coloring to the food, it is not better, could be dangerous, and is not needed because the whole top is red. Plenty of red built-in, and it works fine. The hummers get it. 5) No problems with ants - because the center where the metal hanger connects is a separate little round compartment. You fill that with about 2 ounces of water for 2 reasons. 1) the hummers like it. 2) the ants can't get past it. All good there! These feeders came in a 2 pack, and I thought that is great because that guarantees I have a spare feeder, just in case. You know those little guys need to eat every 20 minutes! Humming bird food recipe; 1/2 cup regular white granulated sugar. 2 cups water (that is a 4:1 ratio to replicate flower nectar). Heat water to boiling or almost boiling. Stir in the sugar until completely dissolved. Takes about 1-3 minutes. Turn off heat, let cool. Do not add coloring. Can refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. Discard if it gets any mold at all. Sugar is cheap and is what they need. And some bugs, I hear they also need to eat some bugs for protein too. This feeder easily holds 1 cup (8 oz). You want to feed the hummers good fresh food, so change it often enough. Something between every 2 - 8 days depending on the outside temperatures. This feeder is really easy to clean - just like a bowl. I hope this info is helpful to you! :-)
