Affordable peace of mind about my aging auto.
Several months after moving 1,000 miles from my trusted mechanic, I broke into a cold sweat when my check engine light came on. I once had the CE light come on as I was driving past a Ford dealer. I pulled in and ask them to connect it and tell me the error code. They wanted to write up a service ticket and charge me $180 for diagnostics. So when the CE light came on the other day, I panicked and parked it in my garage. When I came down off the ledge, I opened Amazon and searched for OBD reader. After checking ratings and reading reviews, I chose the BAFX reader. It is affordable and could connect to my Android phone using bluetooth. The device came with excellent, easy-to-read instructions and prominently displayed web address if I needed additional help. I downloaded the suggested app (Torque Lite), thinking I'd start there and check out alternatives if needed. FIVE MINUTES tops to pair the device with my phone, get the code, and fix the problem. The code indicated a minor emissions problem and recommended checking the gas cap, pipes, hoses. I had just gotten gas a couple of days before, so I started there. I pulled off the gas cap, put it back on, and cleared the code through the app. 5 days have passed and my CE light hasn't come back on, so I think the problem is solved. I'll be keeping my BAFX OBDII reader in the glovebox. Eventually, my 2001 Ford Explorer will need more than a tweak on the gas cap, but I'll be able to determine if I can keep driving or need to find the nearest trustworthy mechanic.
