So far so good
I just got my Nest Protect and so far I like it. I am an owner of the Nest thermostat and I have had my eye on a Nest Protect but the first generation had mixed reviews. I live in a smaller apartment and sometimes when I cook, my old alarm would go off (I dunno why, I cook all the time, in fact I've got something cooking while I type this review). I'm hoping that the Protect will allow me to silence it without needing to unplug the darn thing. I also like the path lighting if you walk under it.
I've uploaded a basic video of everything that you get and a sound test. Before you install it, scan the QR code on the bottom. I had to take mine down after I got it all situated. If you're slightly OCD the square shape can be annoying to get leveled out on the ceiling. I got it setup and it's now part of my home automation.
Note: This is still an early review and I can't really judge it until I've used it. I'll keep updating as I come across any annoyances or tests. I won't be starting a fire on purpose to see if the silence works.
Update 7/17 - So one day in and no problems. At first I didn't think the night light would work very well but in the dark it provides just the perfect amount of light. It lights up the hallway just enough to see but no more. I haven't started any fires yet so I still haven't tested the silencing or alarm itself aside from the actual test button. The important thing is that there haven't been any false alarms, yet. Also the wired version still comes with batteries so the testing can be done when you have it unplugged and it will still work if the electricity goes out.
Update 7/21: I'm going to bump this product up to 5 stars. I've had no problem with it. The app works well and I can check on the protect if I need to. It will give you a green flash to let it know it's batteries are still good and it's monthly self checks are reassuring. Hopefully this never has to go off for real but I'm confident it would alert me and get me out of there.
Update 8/4: Last night I was cooking up a delicious meal and I had enough smoke to trigger the alarm. When it first noticed the smoke it gave a verbal warning that it detected smoke and would sound the alarm soon. My phone also buzzed with the notification. I quickly opened the app and was able to silence the alarm. The Protect kept its yellow ring until the smoke cleared. Once the smoke cleared my phone buzzed and showed me that the smoke had cleared. It also provides a nice log of when and what happened. I am still very impressed by the Protect and it does everything that I want it to.
Update 9/17: I still have no complaints from this little guy. My favorite features is silencing the alarm from the app and the path lighting. Just last night the power went out and it told me "Heads up, the power is out." I fully recommend this product.
