Device? Awesome! Instructions? Terrible!
I bought this little gadget to help out a cheap laptop that couldn't take full advantage my new home AC wireless network. First, I want to say that the device itself works great - genuinely amazing, with 4x faster measured network speeds now that it is up and running. But the instructions? Let me save you two hours of your life that you will never get back. Here is how to correctly install the device under 64-bit Windows 10 if your laptop has a built-in wireless adapter: Step 1: Throw away the instructions. They are worthless (and written for Windows 8, in any case) Step 2: If you are not going to use the mini CD driver install disk, go to the EDUP web site (www-dot-szedup-dot-com) and download the correct Realtek USB Wireless drivers for the EDUP EP-DB1607. Do NOT run the install yet. Step 3: Disable your installed wireless network adapter. It is NOT enough to "turn off WiFi"! You must disable the adapter completely in the network device settings. You will know you did it correctly when you no longer see any wireless connection options. Step 4: Run the driver install program (Setup-dot-exe) Step 5: Restart your computer to finish installing the drivers. This will NOT install the Realtek USB Wireless Connection Monitor utility, no matter what the instructions tell you, so don't bother looking for the new program/icon after you install the drivers. (You didn't throw away the instructions, did you? That's why you're confused right now. Consider this my "I told you so" moment.) Step 6: Connect the device to an available USB 2.0 port. It will now plug-and-play. Step 7: Open your network connections, and turn on the new wireless connection (if necessary) Step 8: Connect to your wireless network This would be a 5-star plug-and-play device for 64-bit Windows 10 if the instructions were in any way useful. Since they not only fail to help, but also give you advice that is the opposite of what you should be doing, I am generously withholding only one star. And that's it -- you're up and running. Run a speed test a few times, and impress your friends with how fast your connection is :-)
