Things to check before you buy!
Things to check before you buy: □1. Your existing light switch "box" (inside the wall) has the "neutral" wire available, not just the (switched) "live" wire. Old houses, and some other installations, may only have the single "live" wire going thru the wall box. This switch, because it has active electronics, needs both to work. □2. Preferably, your existing light switch "box" has a "ground" connection. I got this to work without grounding but you may not be comfortable, safety-wise, doing so. □3. Your existing light switch "box" (inside the wall) is WIDE and DEEP enough. The part of the switch that's inside the wall is MUCH larger than that of the simple, mechanical switch it replaces. With the not-so-flexible in-wall wires, it _barely_ fit in my modern-construction wall box. In an older construction you may have some serious digging to do. □4. Finally, make sure YOU are comfortable with: (□a) Electrical installation - wires, insulation, etc. Neither the product nor the downloadable online manual comes a wiring diagram (!); tech support was NOT helpful. If you're not, budget a professional electrician installation. This could get expensive. (□b) Alexa configuration requires multiple, non-trivial steps: (1) find, download and install the TP-Link Kasa app on your smartphone, (2) set up a Kasa account; (3) verify your email for the Kasa account, (4) configure the switch using the Kasa account: locate the device, set up WiFi, and name the switch a name that can be recognized by Alexa, (5) add the Kasa skill in your Alexa app, (6) link your Kasa account to your Alexa app and Amazon account. Simple. NOT. KIDS ALERT: Every Echo / Tap / Dot on your account controls the switch. A Dot in the kids' room can and will be used to turn on the lights in your bedroom at 2:00 am with a simple voice command. Mine think it's funny. ALEXA TIP: If you have multiple Amazon household accounts, the account your Echo/Tap/Dot is on MUST be the same as the account linked to the Kasa app. If you checked ✓ in all of the □ checkboxes above, you'll love it. The product itself is a solid 5-star, well done, good quality (I took one star off for non-supportive tech support).
