Not a gory thriller, another kind of movie
I understand some of the criticisms that "nothing happened" and it was "anticlimactic". The movie was kind of set up to be a little gory, thriller-y, horror and if you that is what you wanted / expected, i can understand being let down. For me, I think the movie is more trying to show the 'horror', the fear, the forgottenness that women experience at the hands of men and society on the daily. Protecting men's potential at the cost of women's futures. How so many lives were destroyed by a secret that everyone hoped was forgotten. That even when someone is gone, their pain can live on and consumes others. The devastating effects of trauma on those who are left behind. I think the movie was trying to show that that is where the really terror lies - it is in the every day for many people. ****** MAJOR SPOILERS ****** it really struck me that even though Cassie was in so much pain, that this event consumed her life in pretty much every way, that she didn't commit violence to any of them. She put circumstances into play to mess with people mentally, yes. But nothing ~actually happened~. It was on puRPOSE that that didn't happen. That even in consuming rage and grief there is still a line there that couldn't be crossed. She KNEW SHE was the one who was going to die!!! Even her ultimate revenge resulted in her OWN destruction, and yes. He's going to jail and probably some other people as well. But the justice came at such a price. Nina's life. Her life. Her parents grief and confusion... the bride... etcetc. That's the point. It takes everything. It's not just some joke at a party that everyone moves on from. Assault affects lives, it takes lives, it spreads like a poison. Think of how much could have been different if he had been prosecuted for real at the time of the assault. Real life is so much more horrific for so many people than a stabby gory thriller movie could ever be. That's the message here.
