Going over well-annotated games will improve your game!
There are several components necessary for a successful training. One of them is reviewing well-annotated games. All you need is a good collection of games and a chessboard and some quiet place. While there are many book collections, what distinguish Mr. Snyder's books from the crowd are a nice layout, good selection of games and a very clear format in which nearly every move is explained. Mr. Snyder is an extremely experienced coach and fulfills this task diligently. This particular book is aimed at the players in 1200-2200 range. There are some original analyses in several openings - Ruy Lopez, Sicilian, Petroff's Defense etc... The games were chosen for their instructive value for not just openings, but tactics, positional ideas and the most important concepts that the typical non-master tournament player needs to know. I have a few special ways that I recommend to my students in order to enhance training: try the guessing game awarding yourself a point or two for finding the right moves. Also, try to replay the game 2-3 times, each time with minimum looking at the book, and see if the ideas sunk in! Good luck! Have you taken your "Chess Exam" yet?
