Great Game Play; Virtually Zero Diversity
This is the Harvest Moon that I remember! I am so happy about that and I played for hours last night and am now in the beginning of first year Autumn... but you'd think that they would have decided to be inclusive and the makers of the game did not make an effort in this regard.
There is a huge downside to this game; 99% of the characters are white. I saw 1 black person whom has a cliche stereotype of being a lazy, no good guy. This is even more apparent in the way a character named Rick speaks about him. Even the characters that are supposed to be of an Asian ethnicity look like they are dark haired white people.
The skin tones offered for your character play choice are ghost pale, cream white, or a dark tan. Black, olive, or even a proper brown shade are not offered in this game. The features of all of the characters are decidedly white.
I feel like it wouldn't have been hard for them to have kept the same game, graphics, play, storyline, and then just diversify characters. They did not. The sole black character is a token Male and they picked him for the lazy spot. Why not the brother/son working to take care of his sister and sick mother, while their father searches for a cure? Why couldn't he have been the doctor or the blacksmith apprentice whom seeks approval in the family business? Why didn't they pick the loner who came to town that only wants acceptance and to find his place? Or the sarcastic Carpenter who seems to hold a chip on his shoulder and loves art? No, their token black character is a lazy Male that only and reluctantly works in the summertime and has the town speaking ill of him.
I hope that this review makes it to Nintendo and I will be writing them myself about this. As I said, love the game play, but do not like the lack of diversity.
