There's a frood who really knows where his towel is.
I don't know what happened over the years but everything I've looked at/bought (from Walmart to Williams-Sonoma) in the last 6 years are thin and gauzy.
It's been so long since I've seen a high-quality flour sack towel that I had to find one of the towels I bought 12 years ago (which is still being used) to compare it to.
These towels are closer than anything else I've bought-and I have bought a lot. I've used flour-sack towels-both cheap and expensive-for everything that you could imagine using them for around the house for the last 12 years. Drying, cleaning, colander, trivet, pot-holder, sushi rice pot-seal, dust mask, tied sacks, humidity control, cutting board stabilizer, bandanna, sling, shop-rags, inter-galactic space travel, etc.; there are very few tools in a kitchen/home that are more versatile than good quality flour-sack towel.
Proper measurements (square corners), seams on all sides and a tight thread-count mean an easily stack-able, fold-able and durable towel.
Tip: wash it in hot/cold cycle with 1 cup vinegar and then dry hot/cold before the first use. It will tighten the weave more and perform like a champ. It also takes on a "flour sack" texture. Never use fabric softener, it kills the absorbency.
