I was a little concerned because some of the reviews mentioned texture and that the ice did not shave down that much, but I went ahead and bought it anyway. I already had a big shave from another company that makes the fluffy ice and that thing is a pain to use. The best thing about the Nostalgia one is that you use regular ice maker ice. You don't need a special mold like my other machine. I start out with crushed ice from my icemaker, I am not sure if this helps but I feel like it does. The texture is not like the fluffy ice, its more like those rainbow snow cones you get from the ice cream truck. And to fill it up like the picture would take opening it and filling it 15 times. Each time you fill it. I use a 16 oz glass of crushed ice and it maybe makes 3 snow cones. It doesn't hold much in the chopper part. I initially got it for an outside summer party. I have since used it almost every day. I have 5 kids and it's been a hot summer so far. I like the look of it, I have just left it on the counter. I feel like the shelf is useless and the door feels like its going to snap when you open or close it but it works. When I am done, I scoop out most of the ice and just lay it on its side and let it drain into the sink and then I wipe it out. Very easy. Even if it only lasts the summer, I feel like I got my moneys worth out of it.
