A classic whodunnit set in modern times
I love it I love it I love it! I am a BIG fan of Poirot books and whodunnit mysteries and this one satisfied my itch. An original movie at that, how often do you see that these days! It's not based on a true story, or adapted from a book, or a sequel, or a comic book superhero/ video game movie. And what a refreshing take on a whodunnit this movie is! It is actually set in modern times, which honestly I didn't think you could do with how "sexy" modern mysteries and cop movies have become. Honestly I was kept guessing the entire time and I thought the whole plot was very satisfying with a neat bow to tie everything together. It does really remind me of Poirot in that all the information is there the entire time, it's not some ridiculous surprise like some modern mystery movies that try too hard and it doesn't make sense for that character to be the bad guy, they just make it so in order to have some crazy twist. I didn't know the answer, it was a difficult mystery to guess. However, if you were to watch it again you would see all the clues were there the whole time.
I have one tiny gripe with this movie. This movie can be a cult classic, but they added these political one liner quips as jokes ("SJW" this, "alt right troll" that) which are too contemporary and in a few years will seem really outdated. It is not intrusive to the movie, and in the end everyone shows their ugly true selves so it doesn't matter. To me these are one dimensional aspects of their personalities which can be switched to anything and it wouldn't affect the plotline.
Other than that, the movie is pretty much perfect and very entertaining. The main actress is perfect, her acting was incredible and she really did sell you on this kind hearted person but at the same time you are still guessing her intentions. She was very likable as the protagonist, a fantastic female lead without feeling like a Mary Sue or some of the infallible female characters you would see today with 0 flaws, who outsmarts everyone and saves the day. The main character feels like a real person, which is pretty rare to see for female characters these days. There is a lot of character depth which was written into the script and acted really well. I am very impressed as she is a younger actress that is less famous and is put up against such a strong cast. EVERY SINGLE ACTOR did a phenomenal job, no one outshines anyone, there are no weak links. Daniel Craig (no surprises here) was simply wonderful. He was so good to where I'm wondering if he's a fool or playing the fool on purpose the entire time. You will have to watch and see. I loved his over the top southern accent.
What. A. Treat!
I sincerely hope they make a sequel with Daniel Craig reprising his role as Detective Blanc, working a completely new case with an entire new cast. This could be the new Poirot!!
