Will save your mattress from pet pee
6/27/2016 *Update* I woke up this morning to a puddle of fresh cat pee on the bed. Thankfully this protector was on the mattress so all I had to do was soak up the spot with Nature's Miracle and throw the sheets and this in the wash. NO mess. Drying does take longer because you have to use low heat, but overall this is waterproof and kept my mattress free of cat pee this morning. Just thought I'd share. Here's some advice I am going to share that will hopefully help you save your mattress. My trial and error. I have 4 cats (1 female, 3 neutered males). 3 of my cats I raised as kittens and other was an adult high kill shelter rescue- so 2 of my male cats were not neutered and sprayed. Now after lots of trial and error I have found solutions that work and am sharing them with you so hopefully you won't go through all the frustrations I did trying to clean the house of that awful cat spray stench and cat pee smell. One of the favorite places for my male cats to pee and spray was/is the bed. I am not sure why, but I've read something about cats wanting to mingle their smell with yours, especially if they have separation anxiety when you're gone during the day. Anyone who has tried getting cat spray smell out of a mattress will tell you that it is nearly impossible and many probably have thrown out the mattress because the smell is so hard to remove. If you don't get a mattress protector like this one on the mattress in time and a cat pees or sprays on it, you will need to find a way to clean up the pee smell (both to your senses and the cats senses) or else the cat will continue to back to that same place to pee/spray again. Here is my solution that might help save a mattress. When my cats sprayed the bed and this all stopped after they were neutered, except one cat is 'high strung' and the vet thinks he has anxiety issues- which means that when he gets mad at me he seeks out the bed or pillows to pee on (and no sometimes he doesn't care if I am sleeping in the bed, he will go about his business as if I wasn't even there). The trick is to treat the pee area (once you find it) because honestly that smell is awful, who wants to sleep in a bed that smells like a skunk marinated it's stink all over your mattress? (that is what cat spray smells like, in my opinion). Natures Miracle just for Cats- urine smell and stain remover works wonders to treat the pee/spray spot FIRST. Follow instructions there on the bottle but to treat a mattress of memory foam topper I pour a cup full of NM onto the pee spot and let it soak. Blot after an hour. Smell to see if the horrendous odor is still there and pour on another cup if it is. IF the smell is gone and all you can smell is NM, then blot and let it air out till dry before putting sheets and a water proof mattress protector back on. You can find Natures Miracle here > and I do suggest buying a gallon bottle if you have a cat with any issues peeing or spraying. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002I3ANQ8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Now for this waterproof mattress protector- I love it. It has saved me lots of time and cleaning when my cat decides to pee on the bed. Now all I do is wipe the spot down with some Natures Miracle, wash the pad in the washer and done. No more soaking and struggling to get the pee smell gone from my mattress. I do love how this pad keeps the pee from going through to the mattress even if I don't catch it till it's dry. To those who are new like I was to waterproof vs water resistant- waterproof is when liquid doesn't go through material and eventually dries there. Water resistant is when the liquid will go through the material if you don't pick it up IMMEDIATELY and it will go through to your mattress and dry there if not picked up right away. I would much rather have water proof because I can't always find where the cat peed on time and when I do find it, the spot is already dried- the stink is stronger dry. Overall I am very happy with this mattress protector because it is not crinkly, makes no noise when we sleep on it and stays put on the bed without us and it sliding around all night long. This launders easily with the sheets and when my cat does get mad enough at me to pee on the bed, like I said, it's so much easier cleaning pee of THIS than it is the mattress or memory foam. I'd highly recommend to everyone who has pets or kids. My 18 mo old occasionally leaks through his diaper at night, so I ordered a second one just for his crib and couldn't be happier with that. Hopefully this has helped save someone else's bed. I wish when my cat first started spraying that someone had written a blog or review like this one tying the 2 things together- mattress protector/Natures Miracle cat pee odor remover because honestly, who has time to be scrubbing pee off a mattress anyways? In my attached picture you can see a puddle of water I made at the kitchen sink. The water stayed right there until I of course spilled it all over myself. I am happy to say the water does not go through, not even a drop.
