If Your Hummingbird Habit Has Taken Over Your Life
Are you buying warehouse size bags of sugar? Are you swarmed by inquisitive little critters when you go outside? Have they taken to staring into your windows and chirping angrily when supplies start to run low? Then this is the feeder you want. I’ve literally tried every major feeder brand out there, and while this feeder is pricey, it is worth the money. Here’s why: Every part of this feeder can go into the dishwasher, except the little wire hook. Plastic parts on the top rack. If you want to feed Hummingbirds, sanitation is absolutely essential. Feeders can quickly get black mold, and if the birds catch it, they die a slow death by starvation, because their little throats swell up, and they can’t eat or drink. If you won’t clean your feeders, much better not to feed them at all. Being able to clean in the dishwasher sanitizes the feeders so that you don’t have to scrub with those itty bitty brushes. The top of the feeder screws on to the glass reservoir. I can’t begin to tell you how this is design genius. Most feeder tops are glued on, or are attached by a metal cage, which means they can never go in the dishwasher. It also means that eventually the glue will fail, your feeder reservoir will fall off the hook, and you’ll have a mess on your lawn or patio. The Feeder top has a space that doubles as an ant moat, so you don’t need a separate one. Just a couple of concerns: When filled to the top with sugar water, this heavy duty glass feeder weighs about 9 lbs. Make sure to hold it from both the top and bottom when you carry it, and make sure you have somewhere sturdy to hang it from. The wire hook that comes with it looks flimsy, but it’s not. Guard it carefully. The opening in the top of the feeder is tiny, and good luck trying to contact the company about a replacement (I’m thinking your best bet would actually be a zip tie).
