Buy this.
I first bought a Play 1, which is essentially the gateway drug of Sonos products. Once you get a taste of how great it sounds, how easy it is to use and set up, you feel like something is missing. How about stereo? Isn't two better than one? Without hesitation I bought a second one, and it surpassed my expectations. Then I saw the Playbar at Best Buy and again, I couldn't contain myself - 5 speaker surround sound??? There went $700. But still, something was missing... I needed more bass. I admit, I made the wrong decision. Rather than spend $700 on the sub I figured I could solve the bass problem with 2 play 5's as my satellite speakers (and I moved the play 1' to my girlfriends house).
Do not make the mistake I did. If I could do it over again here's what I would do: Buy the playbar, next the sub, then finally add the play 1's as satellite speakers. Why? Without getting technical, the playbar isn't made to handle much bass, so when the playbar is trying to produce the entire range of sound the highs get muddled when trying to produce lows. When you add the sub, all the speakers work together to produce deep lows and crisp highs - you'll hear sound definition so real you'll think you're there. Dialogue becomes crystal clear as well. I also would say it broadens the sound field effect you get from the playbar as well.
Bottom line, the sonos sub and playbar are a match made in heaven. Buy the sub before investing in other speakers.
