Works and Looks great but a pain to install
I'll get to the installation troubles but I wanted to discuss some other stuff first. Works great - lots of suction. Looks great - all visible surfaces are stainless steel except for the clock/control panel. Also the brand name, Hauslane, is pretty inconspicuous - it's just barely visible. I really appreciate that since I'm really not into branded products. I sort of don't like the clock - it's maybe a bit too nit-picky - but I don't like that it displays the time with a leading zero if the hour is less than 10, like 02:34. I also wish I could turn on the fan or lights with one-touch. Instead you have to touch the power button and then select the light or fan to turn it on. I like the brightness of the lighting but didn't like the cold temperature of the LEDs it shipped with so for a warmer light with better color accuracy (don't mock color accuracy - it's really helpful when browning ground beef!) I swapped them out with these: "Philips 465054 LED GU10 Dimmable 35-Degree Flood Light Bulb: 400-Lumen, 3000-Kelvin, 6-Watt (50-Watt Equivalent), 3-Pack" The installation... Installation was a gawddamned nightmare. The reason is actually really simple: the unit is NOT 36in wide - it's 35 5/8 in wide. But NOWHERE does it say that it's 35 3/8 in wide. Every thing in the installation manual talks about the dimension of the opening needing to be 36in wide. So do yourself a HUGE favor and move the pilot holes for your screws on the left 3/16 inches in from the left side and the pilot holes on the right 3/16 inches in from the right. But don't take my word for it - measure the width of your unit (stop giggling) and the distance between the screw holes (I said stop giggling) then adjust your pilot holes accordingly. The placement of the vent holes in the instructions seemed to be accurate. Yes, I know. The other reviews say this thing is hard to install. I read 'em, too. And I, too, thought "Psssh... those guys probably don't even own a screw gun and have trouble putting together an Ikea end table. This thing doesn't look complicated." Well, I was wrong - this thing was a pain in the asterisk to install. I've installed 4 other range hoods before this one - some were new work where I had to cut all the holes myself, the other two were swaps where I had to do some work to make them fit. Nothing too difficult. This was new work - brand new cabinets - so it should have been all the more easy: just cut the holes for the vent, drill the pilot holes and ta-da! Nope. That 3/8 inches made a huge difference. I was struggling 2 hours trying to line up those damn pilot holes before it dawned on me that there was some wiggle room to the left and right which meant that the fricken thing was less than 36 in wide. And since all my measurements were based on an exactly 36in wide unit, everything was off. After that realization, and drilling new holes, it was easy.
