Ok so I waited 2 weeks to write a review because I wanted to give us time to adjust from sleeping on crappy bargain mart pillows bought from big blue retail/grocery stores. That said, the expectation that it will remain as cold as a block of ice throught the night is unrealistic! But these are cold to the touch, and if you want the continual chill effect, you will have to flip it throught your sleep. I do this already, often without waking to a fully conscious state. The outer cover is what delivers the cooling effect. I am not too sure that the gel foam inside the second case does much cooling, but it does cradle your head as if jesus himself were craddling your head in his lap. Despite some reviews and answers to questions asked, the fill IS adjustable, simply unzip both cases and pull some out. We store ours in a ziplock bag for future use. I wasn't sure that we would like using the pillows without a pillow case, but after trying it both ways the only real difference i found is without the pillow case the pillow feels a little colder but is much slipperier when trying to fold or mold( I, for what ever reason, never just lay my head in the middle of the pillow, i like to tuck the corner under itself). If you use a pillow case, it is best to find a pillow case made of 100% cotton of percale weave, as i found that other material really defeats the cooling properties of the outer case. To sum it up, it is a quality, adjustable to your preference pillow that has the best cooling properties that i have found to date. If that is what you are looking for, i would recommend this pillow.
