Ahhhh! Diana is back and in GREAT form!
At last, a return to the Diana I knew and loved. This lovely lady had really lost her way under the direction and production of her husband, Elvis Costello, who I am sure loves her very much but doesn't have a clue what standards need for production, or what she needs for production. So, she goes back to Tommy LiPuma (who died in March of 2017 unfortunately). What a great choice Diana made! This is an OUTSTANDING album.
There is a reason it is titled "Turn Up the Quiet": Tommy wanted you to HEAR the instruments, the vocals, the emotion in the breathing, etc, instead of a sonic rush of noise. He does this by allowing some "quiet" in the recording. I am frankly amazed at the reviewer that stated that he didn't like the sound quality. That is nonsense. It is very good. If you don't believe me, look up the professional reviews online.
As for Diana, she has been drifting for some years now. She found her focus again on this album. It is unfortunate for everyone that Tommy died shortly after producing this album for her. I hope she remembers her center and can keep focused for years to come without him. This is a beautifully played and sung album. Diana's voice is velvety smooth, just what is required. The piano is gorgeous.
"The Look of Love" is in my top five albums of all time, of any genre, and this one is on a par with that great album.
Kudos, Diana! I hope you read your reviews. You did a great job! I love it and I am glad to see you have returned to your lovely form.
