If you need to supplement iron, this is the best form
If you have iron deficiency anemia, iron supplementation is the only way to deal with it. There are different forms of iron, though, and some tend to cause worse side effects than others. In general iron tends to cause stomach discomfort and constipation, but this form of iron, iron bisglycinate, is a chelated form that from what I've seen has fewer to no side effects. My wife used this brand after her bloodwork showed exceptionally low levels of ferritin. While taking a relatively high dose of these iron pills, she didn't experience any stomach discomfort, nor constipation, and was able to get her ferritin level up very quickly. It must be said that she also used several other "tricks" to make the iron work better: she always took the iron supplements with something containing vitamin C (ascorbic acid): either lemonade, orange juice, or some ascorbic acid powder mixed with water, and she was sure to avoid foods and beverages that impair iron absorption (dairy, coffee, etc... you can find a list if you do an internet search). I can definitely recommend this iron over other iron supplements because when she switched brands, her bloodwork showed that her ferritin was no longer increasing (in fact, it started dropping while using the other brand!) After she went back to these Solgar iron pills, her ferritin started rising again. This tells me that Solgar is a solid choice in terms of effectiveness. If you found this review helpful, please consider letting me know. Update April 2018: I continue to use these Solgar Iron Supplements with good results. My new strategy for dosing (now that ferritin levels are not so low) is to take 1 capsule with a glass of water + ascorbic acid. I repeat this later in the day (if necessary) until BMs turn dark (almost black). This is a sign that excess iron is being excreted. Once I see BMs are darker, I stop taking more iron until the color starts getting lighter again.
